Any of you practice yoga on the trail?

I’m a relatively new Bikram yoga practicioner, and was wondering how many thru-hikers out there take their yoga routines with them when they set out on the trail. I imagine a morning in the Sierras with some tea, and a sanyasa yoga routine to be pretty fantastic.

Yoga on the trail has been tricky for me, primarily because I can’t remember all the postures! That said, sun salutations in the morning or at the end of the day are a good way to wake up the body and stretch some sore muscles.

A z-rest or other closed foam pad can work well at a mat. Thermarests are like trying to do a standing balance on a balance ball!

novakaine! i, like you, am eagerly anticipating bringing my yoga practice on trail with me this summer. i would agree with tumblina and gravitate towards the sun sals regime. as you well know, sun sals, much to their advantage, can be easily modified to be agrressive or gentle, whichever you are in the mood for. yoga journal has some good online slideshows that you may wish to view beforehand to get some ideas on modifying various poses. above all…yoga, whether practiced at the start or days’ end, is indisputably a dose of love to the mind, body, spirit and soul.

I like to position myself on a ledge in the lotus postion, facing the rising or setting sun, align my chakras to the four corners of the earth, wind, fire, and water, and let my kundalini flow out in a deep baritone oommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

“let my kundalini flow out in a deep baritone”

That is a beautiful way to describe passing gas.
