Any supplemental maps?

Hi,
This has been touched on before, but I’d love to hear from a hiker who has hiked the whole trail in the past year or two. Are the guidebook strip maps/azta cd maps enough for the trail? No gps here, just maps and compass. I’m specifically wondering about the unfinished sections of trail.
Heading out april 1.
Thanks for info.

I think the azta maps are the ones to use. We had a pre-release version of them last year. I am not familiar with the guidebook strip maps, but I understand the trail has changed a bit since the guidebook was published.

I’m also a compass and map, no GPS hiker. I’ve hiked about 200 miles so far this year with the guidebook only, and it works OK, but I’ve missed some newer trail sections. If you join the ATA you can download updates, but you need the AZ TOPO! software to see it.

I haven’t used any other maps for the AZT. I have seen some very large paper maps and they look huge. I would not carry them hiking. I’m not sure if they’re what you’re talking about.

You do need very good map and compass skills to stay on the AZT. It’s the kind of trail where you don’t always know when you’re on it, but you do know when you’re off it.

The cd maps are okay, what I don’t like about them is that they don’t show all side trails and the red line makes it impossible to see if you’re on a dirt rd or trail. Be sure to get the most updated trail descriptions and pay attention and you should be okay. I like to carry forest service maps for extra info because they show side roads and trails better.
