Anybody going to Cosby Knob Shelter

Ladies and Gents,

Is anybody stopping by Cosby Knob Shelter in Great Smoky Mountains National Park? If so, and if you have time, paper and pen, I’d love to have a copy of the graffiti scrawled on the left wall of the shelter (left as your sitting on the shelter floor). The graffiti gives dire “warnings” of hauntings, things tearing open sleeping bags, etc.

I want to write a little story about this, but that didn’t occur to me until two days after I stayed at Cosby Knob on Sunday, Sept. 16. I can remember the general warnings, but I’d prefer to quote them accurately. They were funny. (P.S. The shelter isn’t haunted - the strange noises in the night is the local barred owl hooting raucously.)

On further reflection, that graffiti is at Pecks Corner Shelter, not Cosby Knob.

I may be there later in October. How long does it usually take to get there from Springer?

It’s about 240 miles from Springer to Davenport Gap. The terrain is mountainous, so mileage varies. Plus, the daylight hours are growing short. I’ve averaged roughly 12 miles a day covering that terrain, though some folks would do a good bit more. Say, three weeks on average.

Pecks Corner is the second shelter NOBO after Newfound Gap - 10 miles to the north.

You might try posting over at Whiteblaze. If it’s of longstanding repute, then someone is bound to have a photo of it, although nothing appears to be tagged online at this time.
