I know people have been taking a toll for the 2005 crew on the A.T. but, is anyone leaving on or around the 15th of May? Im leave the 15th and dont want to be the only one out there… and affraid of being behind the masses by a month. Im hoping to link up with a some people so im not hiking alone.

Regardless of when you leave, it is hard to find someone to hike with that (1) hikes at your pace (2) you can tolerate (3) they can tolerate you (4) you don’t bore them (5) they don’t bore you, etc etc.
Just get out there and hike. You will meet some and hike with them awhile, then meet others and hike with them awhile, etc.
Seldom does it happen that folks start together and hike the entire trail together, but it does happen.

anthony, i think you will find that you will be hiking “with” hundreds of people, tho you may spend significant time alone. I was surrounded by 100’s of people all the time and yet rarely had anyone within a 1/2 mile of me at any given time. There were times when I did have folks link up with me or we just couldn’t out hike each other and that seemed like a chore.
Once you get out there, you will catch up to the stragglers like me, and pass them and they will pass you on your days off. I was amazed at the “late starters” who blew by me never to be seen again.
You’ll do fine is what I am trying to say. enjoy what the trail throws at you, because some days you will wish for solitude and only find gangs of people you have not hiked with.
Maybe my mental side kicks in on this “ideal” of a perfect hike. I have to admit I sure do miss it.

the 15th of march? you will most likely be trying to get away from the crouds by that time. hundreds will be ahead of you, with you, and behind you.
you may want to reconsider finding a partner. there will be many to choose from in just your first few days out. if you preselect one you may go through the agony of walking for days not hiking your own hike, if you wait till the trail you may find a partiner that is very much like yourself.
ps. ya gotta act quick, but if you get lucky well… maybe a hottie might be on the horizon. :tongue

i started out with someone, ditched them after the second day, started hiking with cheers the third, and now we’re married. you should be afraid of the companionship possibilities on the trail. terrified.
