Anyone know where I can get cheap guidebooks?

About time to start purchasing guidebooks (more to give me something to read through as opposed to actually start planning hard…that may or may not ever come), and while I’d love to buy them through the PCTA and support them, my wallet dictates that cheaper is better.

I checked ebay, and they seem to be “cheap,” if you ignore the $8 shipping charges which take you up to original PCTA price. I also checked half.com but am running into issues with old editions. Any ideas on where I may track down a set of cheap guidebooks and a date book?

And hey, if anyone has a set from 2006 that they’d like to get rid of, I’d be happy to take em off your hands (this is improbable though eh? As I imagine everyones old ones are beat to $hit)

I wish you luck in finding any 2006 hikers who still have their guide books. Mostly we’ve riped them up to save weight, burnt them, used them as TP or otherwise destroyed them shoving them in and out of our pockets all day. I know they books seem expensive, but if you’re actually planing on hiking the trail, you’ll find the shelf price to be well worth it. You can get them through almost any major bookstore without having to pay shipping. The guides are invaluable as almost any PCTer will tell you. Also, if you’re not planning on hiking the trail I’d highly recommend “The Pacific Crest Trail: A Hiker’s Companion” by Karen Berger and Daniel R. Smith. This book is much more conducive to dream reading as I like to call it. The actual guide books are very dry and are most useful on the trail but will put you to sleep if you’re just using them as light reading. The Hiker’s Companion gives a much more comprehensive view of the types of terrain and the natural history along the trail while sparing your the step by step directions that the guide books offer you.
Anyway, good luck with your quest and hope to see you on trail some day.
