The road bridge on Bernheisel Bridge Road that carries the A.T. over Interstate 81 about 9 miles north of Boiling Springs will be under construction from about July 7th, 2008 to about August 31, 2008. The bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic during construction, but will remain open to pedestrians for the duration, EXCEPT for a ten (10) day period starting about August 1st, 2008. During this ten (10) day period, a shuttle will be provided around the bridge between the hours of 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM. Pick-up and drop-off points will be located at either end of the bridge. If the shuttle is not present upon your arrival at the bridge, please see the contractor’s representative for assistance. Exact dates of the pedestrian closure will be posted as they become available.

Hikers arriving at the bridge before 6:00 AM or after 9:00 PM during the ten (10) day closure should follow the posted vehicular detour route. This detour is about 3.5 miles long and follows Bernheisel Bridge, Ridge Hill, Locust Point and Green Hill Roads. These roads are moderately busy and do NOT have sidewalks or in some cases, wide shoulders.

FOR YOUR SAFETY - PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS I-81 ON FOOT!

If you have any questions, please contact either ATC’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Office at 717-258-5771 or Cumberland Valley Appalachian Trail Club at cvatclub@gmail.com.
