Appetite, and Bears

1 serious question, and 1 true but not as serious question.

Serious: with all the talk about bears in the High Sierra, which i’ve dealt with, i don’t see much talk about food protection from bears on the REST of the PCT. Surely, most of the trail is bear habitat. Do most thrus just sleep with their food the whole trail (except the high sierra)? Or do thrus hang their food, etc?

Less serious: i read all these trail journals, and one constant theme is how much everyone eats. Tons and tons of food, and they always write about it with great relish. My problem is that when i READ about thru-hiking, i EAT as if i AM thru-hiking. The other day i ate a whole pizza while reading a trail journal. This is not good. Does anyone else have this problem?

I am having the same problem. I am trying to lose weight before my hike, but everytime I eat something I think about how good it will taste when I am hiking and how grateful I will be to have something to eat. It makes me grateful now and hungry.

Much of the trail is in bear habitat, the difference is that the bears in the Sierra are used to/ unafraid of people and are much more aggressive than the typical bear you’d find wandering around in Washington or Oregon.

Since I started hiking and ultrarunning, I have noticed a significant increase in the amount of food that I’m CAPABLE of eating. Even when I’m not on a hike or training for running, it just seems to take more food for me to feel full. I think you just have to know how much food you actually NEED, and have the self control to make yourself stop eating.

you never have to outrun a bear, just your hiking partner!
