Are Sunscreen, Insect Repellant needed in early May in GA?

I am planning a section hike starting Apr 29 from Springer to Franklin.

When do the leaves come out? I am deciding whether I need to bring sunscreen.

Are the bugs bad that time of year? Are there black flies in GA? Do I need insect repellant?

Thanks for any info,

Peter

We section hiked just for 3 days last week in GA and noticed sunburned hikers (neck, arms). The black flies were biting north of Neels Gap. A fellow hiker sprayed me with Avon’s Skin So Soft and it sure helped. I would think mosquitos would be out in May also. Leaves were starting to come out and would think they’d be out entirely in May. Have fun! :girl

I definitely needed sunscreen for most of GA (Apr 29-May5) - the leaves were partially out, but not in full cover so I had to worry on sunny days. I never used bug spray and never had any problems with poison ivy - the trail was not overgrown at all - gotta love those long smooth dirt stretchs with no rocks or roots.
