Are there really leeches in the rivers and lakes along the AT as potrayed in the movie "SouthBounders"?

I never had any. You'll probably be smelly and hot enough to go swimming regardless of the presence of leeches plus you can always just rip em off or salt them. Now, Sunfish Pond which if I remember correctly is right outta the delaware water gap had a lot of snakes in it; as tempting as it was I decided to skip that one.

the only place we saw leeches on the AT was at Pierce Pond in Maine during mid-August. The little buggers crawled up a rock after Rocky. Scared the hell out of her, but it was funny as hell. you had to be there.

Swamp Fox is correct. Hell can be both funny and scary, depending on your perspective.

There are a lot of beaver ponds and slow moving areas in ME and NH that can have leeches. Never had an issue in the south, but was usually not there when it was warm.

I had a Fisher walk behind me when I was sitting on the rocks at West Carry Pond in Maine. The best way to get a bear or other animal to leave is to reach for your camera, by the time you get it out the animal will be gone.

Rocky Pond, south of Rutland, has some leeches but it is so beautiful a pond that you ignore them. Besides they only bite a little.
