Would there be any benefit to use in shoe cushions, or is it better to only use socks?

I have been wearing gels for a month now (off trail) and haven’t noticed much of a difference. Although I am sure it can only help. Just don’t expect to feel like you are walking on air. They aren’t that good. Gels are more handy if you are wearing hard dress shoes. In a comfortable sneaker there isn’t much of a change. At least in my opinion.

I can’t talk about gel inserts because I have never used them but I do have input as far as using only socks. In my case last year on my thru-hike I used orthopedic inserts for my arches and heels. I do think that most shoes lack a lot of support on that area. Now I spent some money and bought over a hundred dollar inserts but I also had no foot issues last year. Sure they were tired while going through the PA rocks and I ended up with the familiar numb big toe. But all in all no real foot pain and no blisters. I also used sock liners which people either agree work or they don’t. I would however suggest some arch support beyond what your shoes provide.

Since switching to Superfeet brand inserts several years ago my foot issues have decreased dramatically.

2 pairs for $5@MC Sports. Like 4"x3" pad you put on your insoles. My feet got soft this winter, and it’s saved me a lot of pain.

I tried Gel inserts and found them heavy plus they kept moving forward inside my boot jamming up against the front of my toes (they were the right size for the boot). IMO a good thick pair of socks coupled with a sock liner is the way to go.
