Does anyone know how far Asheville, NC is from any of the trail heads? And if so, about how many miles would it be from the start of the trail in Georgia to this step off point? Thanks all.

WeeWee, Asheville is right at 40 miles from Hot Springs NC, which is a Major stopping point for all hikers. You can do the math from Ga to Hot springs.
