Can anyone give me the mileage #s for the start and finish of the 4 state challenge?
Also, is there a sperate Massachusetts Challenge and a Smokey Mountain Challenge?

I believe the 4 state challenge is 42 or 44 miles. I have not heard of a Mass challenge. I seem to recall reading about in someones journal a smokey's run that does the entire park in one shot.
The challenges are interesting but why hurry? I’ld like to see a challenge where the AT is done is the longest time possible:)

The 2011 AT Data Book would be your most accurate source of mileage info, and I suppose you could also use it as a catalyst for developing your own challenges based on location and preferred distance.

From the mileage in The A.T. Guide the 4 state challenge starts at VA-WV border mile 1012.6 to the MD-PA border mile 1055.9.
Dont know about a Mass challenge but there is the attempt to do the state of Connecticutt in one day mile 1454.2 to 1498.4.
Not sure about a Smokey Park challege either since the trail is about 70 miles through the park.

I believe you have your answer to the 4 state challenge. I do know of one attempt to run the entire lenght of the GSMP in 24 hours. The gentleman attempting it did not make it in 24 hours. However, he was not running it as a challenge but trying to make a point about the polllution in the Park. The Connecticutt challenge, never heard of one. I would suggest the Connecticutt challenge would be to hike it the slowest. It's a beautiful hike and there would be no reason to run through it.
