AT in March - Appalachian Trail

In order to test out my new equipment for the upcoming hiking season I wanted to do a very short trip during my Spring Break. I was just wondering, does anyone know if the New Jersey or Pennsylvania section of the AT will be ok to backpack on around mid March?

Parker, the AT will more than likely be fine during the daytime, but it will probably be very cold at night.

i've done a few overnighters in the southern parts of PA in march and had no problems. besides, it'd be a good way to test out the warmth of your bag, right?

Did 97 miles in PA early in March last year from PennMar to Susquehanna. Great section. Unfortunately we ran ino two blizzards, with overnite temps as low as 12. We also had shorts hiking weather a few days later. No telling what you will run into. But this a great section with lots of variety. Mountains, valleys, the Cumberland Valley, Boiling Springs, the Doyle, and Ironmasters Hostel. Recommend it highly for a spring break.

Do it after a big snow. That way, the evil rocks will be smoothed out. But slicker.

The NJ section should be OK, but no guarantees. Sometimes March gets some pretty big dumps of snow. The section in the Delaware Watergap NRA is a nice one.
