AT in SW Virginia

I am starting a thru-hike Apr. 17, doing a flip-flop (Damascus to Katahdin, then Damascus to Springer).
Anyway, I am a little curios regarding the difficulty of the trail in the SW Va. section as it is where I will begin my hike (and I won’t have my “legs” yet).

I have hiked the trail from Damascus to Springer several times, so perhaps some of you folks can give me a comparison as to the differences in difficulty between SW Va. and say, the Nantahalas (which I recall to be a challenging section).

Thanks in advance.

Damascus to Pearisburg is pretty easy. Especially the Highlands. This is where some hikers begin to put in some big miles. Which means it should be a good place to start. There can be some mountains Pearisburg to the SNP but then aren’t there plenty of them in GA??? Then you have a break in the SNP. A little roller coaster to Harper’s Ferry. Maryland is a breeze and by then you should have your hiker legs. Enjoy. Sue/HammockHanger
