AT Shuttle - Appalachian Trail

We are planning on a little 6 or 7 day AT recon this year in preparation for a 2004 thru-hike starting at Amicola Falls on May 5th and going to either Neels Gap or Unicoi Gap. In trying to plan, the biggest problem seems how to get back to Amicola Falls to get our car 6 or 7 days up the trail. Does the Gainesville, GA taxi do that kind of runs or are there any shuttles any of you guys know of?

I would call the folks at Neels Gap (Walysi Yi Center). They probably provide shuttle service or could hook you up with who does. I sectioned hiked from Amicalola Falls to Wallce Gap near Frnklin, NC a few years ago. The owner of the Rainbow Campground gave me a shuttle then. That is a lot further north than your trip would take you, though. Most of the time shuttle services are listed in the “Handbook” or “Companion”

About what did it cost for the shuttle from Rainbow back to Amicalola Falls? I’ve heard shuttles can run $1 permile, which isn’t bad at all, considering the shuttle guy has to drive both ways.

Yes, it was $1 per mile 1 way. I think that guys name was Buddy Crossman, or something like that. I left my car at the campground; he shuttled my friend and me down to Amicalola Falls State Park; we hiked back to the campground in ~ 9 days (~120 mile total)

Randy:
The list Jaybird is talking about is great. Be sure to check around since the prices do vary. The best way to do the shuttle is to find a safe place to park your car and get a shuttle to the starting point, then hike to your car.
You won’t be locked in for a pick-up time and can relax. Also, if you are going to be out 6 or 7 days, unless you plan on very short days, I would plan on making it to Unicoi Gap at least.
