AT south trail conditions

this post is to encourage anyone (hiking right now or otherwise) who might have any information as to how the southernmost sections of the trail look out there at the moment, to please post your findings…(i’m posting after looking at richard anderson’s post who has a similar request for info)…hopefully, between these two threads we can get some accurate descriptions of conditions (mainly concerning snow/ice and blowdowns, and where)…paw and i normally recommend a february start (since we’ve done that a couple of times), but GOOD GRIEF!..this weather is WIERD this year!..(i think the media’s calling it ‘february fury’???)…anybody got any GOOD news for our friends out there who will start this week?..thanks

Bad. very bad. It has been a nasty February. I hiked from Burningtown to wayah yesterday and the snow is knee deep in a lot of places. There are a lot of footprints which have melted and refrozen which makes walking very tedious on the higher elevations. Several folks have opted for snowshoes which came through my camp. The snow has just not melted this year. Seems like waiting a few weeks would be a good idea this year. APPLE

I hiked 3 weekends ago from Burningtown Gap to Cold spring Shelter. And the week before that From Burningtown to Licklog Gap. Conditions were BAD then, I just can’t imagine how bad they are now with all the additional snow. There were many blowdowns from BTG to Licklog, I hear that a certain Angel has cleared some of those however. Some of them were Bad enough that I almost turned back. There were also blowdowns from BTG to Cold sprig but not as bad. The higher you go the worse it gets, by far.

Both Second Stage and Fahmah have some wonderful recent trail conditions posted in their latest journal entries. They are a great read and very informative. I wish them both warmth and sun.

Hey, Apple, when we met a few weeks ago we talked about how the snow had pretty much destroyed your Big tent. I hope things are going better. I was going to try to come that way tomorrow but if conditions are that bad I might wait. I know you said you were only staying through the end of Feb and I was hoping to see you one more time. I really didn’t get a chance to thank you properly for helping me get my truck out of the snow @ Burningtown. Thanks for all you do.

appreciate this info…i just read here on another thread (by bobcat) that the roan mtn area up from carver’s gap was extremely snowy, too…(i’ve gotten the same report from my brother who lives up near those mountains)…i did look at fahmah’s and second stages pics…whoa!..a whole lot of the ‘white stuff’…but it was good to see those guys still SMILING!..i wish all those hikers the best out there…(but i think paw and i are gonna wait a couple weeks before heading out to springer!)…anybody else got any ‘news’ for us 'bout current trail conditions?

i just noticed that there were a couple of posts about a week ago that gave more or less the same bad news about the difficult conditions this year…seems like a few folks are goin’ the ‘snow shoe’ route!

thanks maw-ee for starting this topic. I’ve been concerned about the recent snow events and the persistent cold weather. I’m still going to be heading up and giving it a go. I’ve spoken with the folks at the hikerhostel in dahlonega and I won’t be the only one starting.

So my plan is to follow in the footsteps of others!
