Hello, I was wondering when I could start a Hike from Harpers Ferry North to Maine next year. Would May 1st be too early as far as hitting snow during a normal weather year?

That depends on your pace, too, and how good you are with mud and black flies (snow isn’t the only issue). If you hike the “normal” pace, it might not be a problem. This year I got to the NH/ME border on July 4 (left HF just after Trail Days in late April) and it was still a little too early, but it was an abnormally wet year. I also found deep mud in the low fields in VT. I heard that “they” say it’s usually OK to start a SOBO on July 1. So if you hit the Whites about that time on a NOBO on a normal year, you might be OK. The great advantage of starting earlier is beating the heat, and that worked great for me this year. Good luck!
