AT through Smokies Question

I want to a five day hike on the AT in the Smokies in late spring 2002. My problem is deciding which portion of the park to traverse. Fontana to Newfound Gap or Newfound Gap to Davenport? (I’m also considering a section through the Nantahala.) I know that having hiked the Smokies before, I tend to prefer the old growth areas to the spruce-lined areas–but I also have a thing for sweeping views. With this in mind, I’d like to hear some opinions from those who have already done this section of the trail.

Thanks in advance,

Fontana to Newfound has the best views…if you don’t get caught in a storm. Here, I’ll send a pic to your e-mail address of what cool looks like. B

couldn’t you just hike the whole park in 5 days? That’s just a 14 mile/day avg. which is not too fast, particularly in late spring with longer days.

A slow five day hike with the tough stuff in the beginning would be a good way to go…Especially if they allow you to traverse the dam now…

Newfound Gap to Fontana Dam over the five days.

Day 1. north from Newfound Gap to Charlie’s Bunyan and then south to Ice Water Shelter. 5 miles. Enjoy the vistas north from Charlie’s Bunyan.

Day 2. Ice Water to Double Spring and summit Clingman’s Dome. Enjoy the vistas from the tower and sneak out to the picnic areas along the road next to the AT and enjoy the vistas.

Day 3. Derrick Knob Shelter Enjoy more vistas going south like as you first come out of Double Spring with the views from Silers Bald.

Day 4. Spence Field Shelter With great views of the south east. You will also summit Rockytop with its wonderful views and enough time to enjoy them. Spence Field Shelter also has superb views.

Day 5. Hike to Fontana Dam. This is mostly downhill, so, it can be done nicely in a day. Great views. Stop to enjoy the tower on shuckstack.

Bushwhack: Thanks for the pic. It looks like a great time to hike the trail. I appreciate the time you took to write.

Sweeper: Yes, I could do the trail in a week, but I’m also accomodating my girlfriend who I’m trying to break in slowly. I’m hoping that an easy pace will turn on the desire for future hikes–plus I’m be limited to a week due to work. If she doesn’t love it, I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Mr. Boo: A big thank you for the help and detail you’ve provided. Looks like a plan, and one I’ll most likely adopt. I noticed that in another thread you mentioned the crowded shelters and importance of reservations. Looks like I should get on that aspect now.

Thanks again, folks.
