ATC Trail Guides

Does anyone know why these guides are written north to south, when most hikers are going the opposite direction? Just to be clear, this is not meant as an attack on the guides. I’m just curious to know if there’s a reason.

Nearly Normal is right. The Yankees did it. They were hiking long before the AT was even thought of. The New England States had numerous trails and many hikers. The Long Trail being the oldest and longest at the time. The AT is now part of the Long Trail. It was just a normal progression that when the AT was being built, the people that wrote the guide books (Yankees) would start where they lived. It is ironic that now 90% of people that try and thru-hike start at Springer. And actually alot of northerners start at Springer and have dreams of hiking home. The seasons have alot to do with starting in the South.

I asked myself the same question on my thru-hike. I also noticed all of the T-shirts, hats, etc. all say Maine to Georgia. I guess some paradigms are hard to break.
