I am planning on resuming my section hike at Standing Indian Mountain in North Carolina and finishing up at Fontana Dam. Is Atlanta still the closest(most advantageous) airport to get there and to return home? Any advice appreciated.

Atlanta is the closest international airport and all other smaller airports (Chattanooga TN, Knoxville TN, Asheville NC) that are closer to the trail will be routed through there. You would still have to deal with Atlanta w/ a layover and catching a second flight to one of the smaller airports. Not all flights go through Atlanta(depending on where you’re coming from), so I’d still look into it although it would cost more. You may get lucky…

There is a airport in Johnson City, TN which is close to Erwin and Hampton. Not sure how close that is to Fontana.
