Atlanta to Springer Mtn

Hello! Hope everyone enjoyed Christmas and ate as much as possible (to lose later on the A.T). I’ll be flying into Atlanta from London. I plan on one overnight stop at an airport motel then to head for Springer. As I’ll be fresh off the plane with no food or propane/butane (for obvious reasons) what suggestions does anyone have for stocking up? I’ll propably do as I did before which was an Amtrak to Gainsville GA then a “vets” taxi to Amicalola. If I went to Dahlonega instead for a night, do think that would give me a better chance of finding the stuff I need?

Would be interested to hear how others (who flew into ATL) prepared for, and reached Springer.

Thanks
Ross

Ross,

When are you leaving/arriving to the USA and when is your Springer departure date? I might be able to help - I live in Atlanta. Over. Out.

Hey Dawg ! Where have you been? Haven’t seen you in here much in the last few weeks. Cheers for the offer. I’ll be landing ATL on 23rd March. I think this might be a bit late for you as I think you said you were leaving 1st March?

I just dragged a list of shuttle providers off the ATC website. That could be an option.

Cheers once again Dawg. Hope to see you out there.

Ross:cheers

Cheerio, Chap! I have been visiting family in Indiana. Drove through Bushwack country (Ohio, right?) yeah

March 1st is too early for me. I am planning on a 21st start date - and just a planned date, meaning if I’m ready to go before the 21st, then I’ll leave; if I need a few extra days to prepare, then I’ll wait a few days. As long as I get left before the second week in April, I’m cool with whatever date.

I’ll keep you informed. Later…

There is a new Hiker Hostel in Dahlonega that provides fuel, food, shelter, and shuttle service from the airport to the hostel and from the hostel to Springer. It is at www.hikerhostel.com. I’ve seen the house and it is very nice. Hope this helps.

Ross- I live around Atl and might could give you a ride. I don’t know right now, and won’t until March 18th, when I return from the Virgin Islands (U.S.). Right now, I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t. But I can understand why you’d like to have plans set for a thing like that. I don’t have a 9-5, so am very flexible and love to help other hikers, for the karma scale tips often in my direction. Write down my email and ask on the 18th of March if you could use my help. We could split gas, and no BS fee. :boy

I hiked the AT in 2000 with the people who run the Hike Hostel. They are wonderful and would do anything for you. I hope you stay there, you won’t regret it.

Ross:
Without renting a car, it is possible to get hiking supplies in Atlanta by riding MARTA (the “tube” rail line) from the airport north to the Sandy Springs Station N10. There is an excellent outdoor store called REI about 0.5 km south of this station at 1165 Perimeter Center West. See the websites www.rei.com and www.itsmarta.com for more details and give them a call if you have questions. I’ve never made that walk, but it should be easily doable, it is near a major shopping district called Perimeter Mall.

I’m amazed you made the effort to ride Amtrak to Gainesville. I live near the track on the way to Gainesville and hear it most nights. That thing only leaves NOBO once each night and Gainesville (the chicken processing capital of the world) is not really anywhere near Amicalola Falls and Springer Mtn. Mass transit is very awkward around here, the auto is definitely king. From Atlanta, Georgia Hwy 400 North to Dawsonville is the direction you really want to go. Have a good trip!

I got an email back from the hiker hostel in Dahlonega today. They seem like great people and have offered to pick me the night I land (in the evening!) which is great. Thanks to Tha Wookie for the offer and to Burn!! It’s great to know that there are people out there I don’t know / have never met would be prepared to do these things. I guess that’s what its all about.

A very grateful…Ross
