Atlas Valley shelter

I have no recollection of this little shelter south of Jay Camp. Is it still there? I know it’s technically not an overnight shelter according to the LTG, but is it a safe place to stay for the night? I’m starting to work on my NE 100 Highest and foolishly passed by Big Jay on my LT hike two years ago.

Last time I was there, it was still around but that was over a year ago. It is right next to the road, so I would not recommend it unless the Jay Camp is full. Jay Camp is only another 1/4 mile (easy walk) from there and is a fully enclosed camp with a tent platform nearby (you will pass by it on your way in). A much better place to camp.

According to the Long Trail Guide[2003] the Shelter is still there but the Guide says it’s not intended as an overnight Shelter. There is no outhouse, etc.I remember it as being right next to the road.I dont think it’s a place you would want to stay.As per WoodBadge says, why not stay at Jay camp?:cheers Have good hike

I was there a couple of weeks ago and the shelter’s stil there. There is plenty of room to sleep if you were so inclined, but I was there when it was raining and the roof leaked badly. For all the reasons cited by everybody else, Jay Camp has to be a better option.

I stayed @ Jay Camp on my LT hike, I know what it’s like, this is to bag Big Jay by car camping. Thanks to all, we actually have now decided to do the peaks further south and leave Big Jay for another time.

another option is to hike up jay and stay at the stom shelter up there. i just stayed up there two nights ago. its beneath the tram house. it is intended for hikers and skiers to stay in there. you would need to get your water before 4:30 (inside) (i believe thats the closing time now, it must surely change though) the climb up jay peak is about 1.6 with about 1600-1700 feet of gain. hell take the tram down buy a pizza and beer and ride back up, stay in the shelter! platforms and tables await inside.

funnily enough, this was the only place i slept that i took a pic of.
