August Hike - The Colorado Trail

Due to family issues, I’m off the trail till August if not next year. I’m looking for August start trail journals and there aren’t many.

Any tips? Do the afternoon storms get worse in August?

Monsoon t-storms usually run from early-July thru the end of August (sometimes into early Sept). We are in full monsoon season now as the SW storms started early this week. Most mountain locations get the most precipitation of the year in August so the monsoon t-storms are prevalent. SJ Ron

Lovely. Well, I guess water won’t be an issue…just sitting in the tent all afternoon every day.

We hiked last week North of Molas Pass and we didn’t get rained on but the clouds started building at 1pm instead of 3pm.

Although August is monsoon season, you can still go days with little or no rain. I hiked Molas to Durango 2 years ago in August and had very little rain and t-storms. Your chances of rain are greater in August but that doesn’t mean you will necessarily see rain everyday. At high altitudes you might get lightning in the area around noon and then by 1 or 2 the storms have moved away and you can hike the rest of the afternoon. SJ Ron

Thanks, that helps. When you said Monsoon, I was thinking rain all afternoon.

When we camped in Arkansas in May, 30% chance of scattered thunderstorms meant six hours of non-stop downpour.

In Colorado thunderstorms are typically brief, but intense. Typically…
