Is is too hot to do a section hike from Davenport Gap to Hot Springs this month? We usually do our section hiking in June, but could not this year. We are trying to squeeze it in before going back to school. Please let me know about the weather.
Thanks!

I am heading out sunday to do a section hike from Springer north. Havn’t yet decided how far I want to go. I have been keeping track of the weather every day and looks like it has been between the mid 80s to lower 90’s during the day and in the 60’s at night. Thunderstorms has also been forecasted every night. I have been watching forest service weather sites for different areas to get a good average. Good luck on your trip.

I hiked that section last August (8/23-8/25). It did get in the 80s and the humidity was high, but I enjoyed my hike. I normally hike in the cooler months, so I changed my breakfast based on other TJ users’ suggestion of a cold breakfast of Carnation Instant Breakfast and cereal bars. The early morning temperatures were in the 70s, so hot oatmeal was not that appealing. I was concerned about the scarcity of water, but I never had a dry camp. It did rain the last day, plus 2 days after I arrived at Hot Springs.

Happy Trails!

It’s never too hot to hike! But you will be very warm and very wet all day long. Plan on your first sweat beginning about 7:30 a.m. and lasting until you fall asleep.

Hey Matt, Whats up!! Sweat huh, well I guess thats what happens when walk all day. Plus humidity. Anyway, Looks like a great trip. Here in Texas the humid is so bad that you sweat even when you take a swim. I guess if the creeks are flowing you can at least take a nice break and cool off.

It is too hot right now. Better wait awhile. It will cool down toward Labor Day probably.

If you’re a southerner, the temps right now are fine. It’s not abnormally hot. By mid-August, the nights usually begin to cool a bit and sometimes you catch a cool front this time of year (we did on our hike last August 6-8 last year). I did a section hike one month ago (July 7-9) and it was seasonably warm, but fine. Too, you’ll be at a fairly high elevation, so that helps. If you’re doing the vicinity of Tray Mountain or Standing Indian Mountain, the forecast for Highlands, NC should give you a good idea of what to expect - probably no more than low 80s with 60s at night. Finally, there’s shade almost the entire day since there are few gaps in the foliage in Georgia this time of year.
