I,m going to hike the AT in 2007 and have been concerned about the availability of cooking fuel (Coleman fuel) on the trail. I thought of puting some in each mail drop, but am worried it would be against the law since 9\11. What are your sugestions?

It’s anywhere and everywhere. Sold by the ounce at hostels and hardware stores. Just ask for it when you hit town. Same for butane assuming you have a univeral stove. MSR cans tend to dominate. Alcohol is also plentiful both as a fuel for you and your stove. Esbit or solid fuel tabs are little harder to find.

I think you have to send fuel canisters ground only as a haz mat. I think alcohol can go in your drop box. I mean, the stuff is shipped to stores to sell. The way things are these days, you should really check with the P.O. as you could get big trouble.

You will have NO problems finding fuel on the AT. It’s everywhere and easy to find.

Shipping is fine, you just have to claim it when you bring it to the post office. They’ll put a sticker on it and ship it ground. Be aware that shipped ground takes longer.

Postal regulations prohibit shipping Coleman fuel, period. You can send alcohol by ground, but to ship it completely legally is a hassle (I think the relevant regulations are in Publication 52). Generally you’re better off getting it as you go.

Here’s the data as compiled Gottawalk, ADT '05, on how to mail fuel as of 2005.

denatured fuel is EVERYWHERE along the Trail. hostels will have it for hikers, it’s available from outfitters and even hardware stores carry it.
