If you hike during thru-hiker season (leaving KM in the first half of June), and IF you’re going to carry one, you need it from Kennedy Meadows (mile 697) to Echo Lake (mile 1089). Some people say you can get rid of it at Tuolumne or Sonora Pass. I disagree, because there is still substantial snow north of Tuolumne. And there is a place called “Elephant’s Back” or elephant something just before Carson Pass, which is only 15 miles before Echo Lake. This elephant thing is just like a pass.
