How are the AYCE’s along the trail? And are there a lot of them? Also…when going into town restaraunts, how do you go about making the BO bearable for the other patrons?
PS: I’m just so excited about doing a thru-hike next year that i can’t even tear myself away from this site, reading as many posts as i can. March of next year baby…OH YEAH!!

Hi C-Giddy…

I don’t recall how many AYCE’s I encountered along the way, but I’ll give my two cents about the BO part. I’d say, try to shower before going into a restaurant, if at all possible. If you’re just passing through, making a short stop, maybe swipe here and there with a baby wipe … or two or three, and change your shirt, at least.

I remember the AYCE in Hiawassee, GA. Those at my table had showered and changed before going to dinner. (And a great dinner it was, at the restaurant next to the Holiday Inn. If I remember correctly, it was cheap. Like, five bucks!) As we were eating, a couple of hikers passed our table–hikers who OBVIOUSLY hadn’t showered or changed. And it was noticeable, I tell you. Heads turned. Not that anyone will say anything, necessarily, or kick you out, but it IS a nice thing to do for fellow patrons if you can de-funk a bit.

There are some AYCE’s along the trail. Like everything else, they vary. I didn’t think much of the AYCE at the Fontana Inn. But, the oriental restraurant in Gorham had a great selection and quantity as I recall. Bonanza’s in Waynesboro was great also.

Flame and I enjoyed the oriental restraurant (AYCE) in Daleville, VA. It is just to the right of were you come off of the trail there in town. Across the street from the Best Western. The motel gave us a 10% off coupon. They had about 6 large buffet tables. It was the best AYCE we found on the trail.
