Backpacker's Camp Yosemite

I will be starting the JMT SOBO in less than two weeks and have just run into a scheduling issue. I was planning on staying at the Yosemite Backpacker’s camp the night before beginning. I understand that you can usually get a spot here if you have a JMT reservation for the following day. But now a friend who will be dropping me off at Yosemite would like to stay for that first night as well. My friend will not be going on the hike and will not be on the permit. Will we be able to get a site in the backpacker’s camp, together?? And if so are there places to park a car at the backpacker’s camp? Any advice on getting a site near the start of the JMT would be very appreciated. This will be on Labor day wknd so I believe that all reservable sites are full.

Thank you

Try the info on this page for parking and camping there. And/or call Yosemite and ask them.

Up to four tents can be in each site in the BP camping area. As far as parking, I think it’s drop-off only. You can probably drop your stuff off, go park in one of the other big parking areas, and take the shuttle bus back. A call to the rangers would probably clear this up for you, but I suspect having your friend stay there is technically a violation of the rules. The BP campground is for people without vehicle support. When I was there before my JMT hike in July, though, there were a number of people who were biking through the park or doing shorter hikes that landed them there needing a place to stay without reservations.

It sounds like you may be starting after Labor Day weekend…You would very likely be able to get a space at Camp 4. That is inexpensive and your friend (and car) could also stay there.

I remember a place to park a dozen or so cars right on the edge of the backpacker campground. Then you carry your stuff in to your spot for the night.

Camp 4 is the only other campground in Yosemite Valley where you do not need a reservation. However, you would probably need to be there very early in the morning to get in line for a spot on Labor Day weekend. It is even possible that no one would be leaving if you tried to get in on Saturday or Sunday.
