Backpacker's Campground

My friend and I will be arriving in the valley around noon. Is there any reason that we can’t set up a tent and put our stuff in it at the camp, then go see the sight seeing the rest of the day, or should we keep our stuff with us? How secure, or reasonably safe and out of the way does the campground feel?

It is just across a footbridge from a large car and RV camp. It is not in the least bit remote, A horse/ foot trail passes along the side of the camp.
I left all of my gear in the tent and food in the bear locker and went for a long walk without a thought for the safety of my gear. I guess it’s possible that gear could be stolen but in many years of car camping in similar camps I have never had anything taken. Of course there could always be a first time.

Using the backpackers campground in Yosemite for years. Never a problem with gear. Have seen a bear get into a tent there for food. Pulled out a backpack and destroyed it-even though we all were yelling at it. Use the lockers for anything that smells!!

Do not miss the natural waterslide in the river near the camping/backpacker’s camping area… also, the hike up half dome, although I can’t remember if that is in the valley or up by Tuolum? The Tuol store had vegan products in the 90’s!!! Shower & dinner was available at the tent-lodge back then
