Anyone ever used the precooked bacon on ur hiking trips. If so how long did it last. Its stored on the shelf so im assuming it would last awhile.

I have used the precooked bacon many times on 5-6 day trips. They usualy come in packs of about 15 slices. They are sort of small so I alot 5 for each day. Just heat them in small frying pan/plate. They will keep a long time unopened. I divide the package up into daily zip-locks and have no problem with them keeping fresh for 6 days.

Country ham slices (like Virginia country ham), the really salted kind works great on hiking trips. They come packed in vacuum sealed bags so they take little space and don't require refrigeration. Granted they are salty as all hell but if you really want you can soak them in a bit of water to minimize that. I just put a bit of water in the bottom of my cook pot and heat it up with the ham in it flipping it once to heat through. By the time it's ready the water has evaporated and you're good to go. This is a real treat especially in the winter and I think it works, keeps, and eats better than bacon.

You might also try real cooked bacon bits. Oscar Mayer brand I think. Holds up well, tastes real (because it is). and looks more appetizing than the bacon slices.
