Are bag liners that people talk about keeping their bag clean for the inside of their bag or the outside of their bag? Dont laugh, I admit my name.

Inside. Well, bag liners can be both; either to keep the bag clean inside or keep you warmer. Some are silk or thin down filled or fleece. A liner can be used as a summer bag. Our friends got some thick fleece liners that were really warm. Ugly bags but warm. They got the nick names of Purple Turd and Gray Turd. Some of the new bags are a “sleeping system” of a heavy bag and a light one that together gets you a winter bag.

Liners go on the inside. They are incredibly versitile. They keep the bag somewhat cleaner, do great double duty as a hot weather sleeping bag, laundry bag and even worked as a skirt at camp when the chaffing got real bad (just once). They do weigh an extra pound and they are not needed so use at your own risk.

The Design Salt or Cocoon bag liners also come in silk which is a little pricey. I use the travel sheet type because you can also use it off trail when the sheets look a little suspect. I don’t like sleeping on nylon, but the silk is so comfy and luxurious…well worth the extra 6-8 oz. The silk will last longer if hand washed…dries in a flash…and not mangled in a washing machine. Much easier than dealing with a stinky bag.

I bought a flannel liner but found it so confining that in the summer I sleep on top of the bag and under the liner. In the winter, I let the dog sleep on it and cover us both with a fleece blanket.
