Barrow, Alaska--questions

Now, this may seem a bit off the beaten path. Nonetheless, I could use some help and information.

With respect to Barrow, Alaska, the Northernmost city on the North American Continent:

  1. Have any of you ever been there?

  2. If so, would you have any advice as to landlord contacts and securing housing there?

  3. If so, what brand of winter of winter clothing would you recommend?

  4. If so, what would you have me know about the culture and people of the city?

Thanks more than I can say.

Sincerely, Conan

hmmm… this is a good question ! I live 30 miles outside fairbanks and have never been to barrow …but I am gonna give this a shot. I think they live VERY hard there… lots of drinking and domestic violence as well as animal abuse. Not everyone . I am NOt saying that but it is all prevelent there. This a remote alaskan village… esp. compared to the states… everything will be very different for you. The winter gear they sell in the states probably won’t be nearly as good as the stuff made locally in fairbanks. We understand COLDDDDDDDDDDD up here and, brother, get ready …whatcha coming up here for ? as far as housing…might go to the classifieds in fairbanks paper… or email them and ask for help… have a blast ! what a state she is…

yappy - I am pretty sure Conan lives in Fairbanks, or did.
I have never been to barrow. I believe many of the housing options there are simply renting a room in someone’s house. Rent can run around $800-900 a month.

Here’s a web site with some data: http://www.city-data.com/housing/houses-Barrow-Alaska.html

The temperature range is similar to that of Fairbanks. But it’s windier up there. And flat. Flat, flat, flat. I woulnd’t mind visiting Barrow, but doubt I would want to live there. Average age of residents in the city is under 30, so its a young population. Can’t find an information number for Barrow, but here’s another Web site that toward the bottom has a few numbers for places - a hotel, travel agency - up there. For super cold weather gear, nothing beats fur.

Are you moving up there? If so hope you enjoy it.

Hey Yappy, I’m here in sunny Fairbanks (70-some degrees today?). Will be here working until next Feb. when I will get back out on the trail.
