How long is the PCT? What states does it pass thru? What are its termini? What’s the most scenic section? -Sweeper

The PCT is 2600 miles, 500 more than the AT, and 500 less that the CDT. It is an equestrian trail, but there are not many through-equestrians. It is very stressfull for the horse and you spend most of your day looking for horse food and water. The PCT is, most of the time, graded for the equestrians and therefore does not usually match the vertical steepness/horror of the AT. It starts on the Mexico-USA border near Saco, California and travels six hundred miles through the desert, including close to Death Valley and through the Mojave. It picks up the John Muir Trail (JMT) and passes over the High Sierras, going through Sequoia and Yosimite National Parks, and viers towards the California coast, only to swiftly turn and cross the Columbia River and the Oregon Border. It travels through Oregon and Washington, passing within 10 miles of Mt. Ranier, and going through the North Cascades. It ends just across the Canadian line in Manning providential park. It is much more of a wilderness trail than the AT, but not nearly that of the CDT. About 200-300 people attempt it every year and only 50-100 people complete it. Although that is not many people, the success rate is much higher than that of the AT. PCTers are a much more serious brand of people. Meaning that they know what they are getting into.

HH,

those are good goals to work towards. I personally don’t know about the ADT though. Seems to be too much of a trail-bagger’s trail. I’m more of a mountain/wilderness guy. I read a book on the PCT and saw some great pics recently. Looks like a nice trail. The creme de la creme, though, seems to be the CDT. That would definately be my next long hike. AT is first. One step at a time… -Sweeper

Hi guys, Bushwhack here. Sweeper has been egging (no omelet pun) me on to join you. We’re Jon and Kathy Rudolf. Bramble is my wife. We would have chatted sooner but we have been busy with work and stuff. Intros aside. I have a 1975 copy of a PCT thru hike from a photographer that worked for National Geographic. Although the info is way outdated the flavor is still there and it has some great pictures. I’ll mail it to anyone that wants it. Our e-mail is on the journals page. TTFN
