Bathtub floors or simple ground sheet on the AT

Hey guys,

I was wondering what people think of bathtub floors and the like on tarp shelters. What seems to be the better option for the AT; floor or no floor? Are they really necessary or will a simple ground sheet suffice? Is the bathtub floor worth the extra dinero and the few ounces? I know alot of the “science” on keeping dry is merely where you set up camp, but does the bathtub floor’s security tend to make people lazy when picking a site?

I appreciate the help.

If you buy a tent with a bathtub floor you will never get wet again and you dont need a ground cloth/tarp. I know they have some lightweight one mans with bathtub floors. If I find the link I will post it.

Good luck and God speed.

Not only does the bathtub floor keeps water from running in it also keeps bugs etc out. with no floor at all no telling what can get under the side of your tent. Have a tarp with the floor and would not think of doing with out. happy hiking Trailwalker

I have a Squall2 with the bathtub floor and it performs like a charm. Never been wet with it no matter the rain and no chance of it getting out of place, etc. It also makes a better closure with the bug net (and once you get up into PA and NJ you’ll be more than glad of that, believe me.) I’d never consider a tarptent without one.

fell asleep on one before…

Seriously though, i like my tarp just a simple rectangle, no kitchen floors or bathroom floors… it allows me to set my tarp a wide variety of ways… Get a full sized bug net from Campmor for the few buggy states. Full body length. I kept it from PA to NJ… as far as staying dry… been in some bad rain and wind storms, haven’t gotten wet yet… actually stayed drier than friends who were in bivies and tents… after a while your floor will give up the ghost and water will seep in. I used a ground cloth just inches bigger than my therma rest. I will admit that I have had rivers run through my tarp, but I never got wet. Hey, I could make little boats and float them through my tarp. They all float down here… Sorry, had a pennywise moment. Also friends who had bivy (OR) and tent stored their packs in my tarp because they wanted them to stay dry. just my three fifty… aswah

It comes with claw feet. You fill it up to the top, take a bath in it every night, then pull the plug and sleep well.
