Bear Bags/Canisters

Hello Folks, I’m planning an end-to-end of the Long Trail starting next month, and I was wondering what people are doing/have done in terms of a bear bag or canisters.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I hiked Vt. on a 2002 AT thru and then again on a LT thru in 2003 without any problems from bears. So personally, I would never bother carrying a canister. If you want to hang the food at night, have at it. But I never found that necessary either. Enjoy your trip - it’s a great one!

Hey,
On my 2005 LT, I just hung food at night, w/no problems… Bears aren’t a big issue, mice are! Last year I did the last 100 mi of the LT and forgot bear line, but at the shelters I never had a problem hanging my bag. this summer, on my LT thru, I’ll just bring 30’ of 2mm accesory chord for a bear(mouse) line.
HAVE A GREAT HIKE!

Bottle Rocket is correct that bears are not a problem, but I always hang my food from a tree, you never know whats around. The big issue on the L.T. are the Porkies that Vermont seems to have lots of.They love to eat hiking boots or any item of clothing that has body salts on them.
KEEP EVERYTHING OFF THE FLOOR OF THE OPEN SHELTERS.:boy

Tried a bear cannister for the first two days of the Appalachian trail back in 2005, Knew bottle-rocket so hi there. I gave it up as just to much of a pain in the backside, it is required in grizzle territory but go for the small one or something smallish that is approved if you must. Always hanging food as appropriate as it will cause you little problems, if not hang right kiss you food goodbye and not to bears but to raccoons. Good luck with the hike.
