Bear box at Sunrise Camp

Is there a bear box at Sunrise camp? Is Sunrise a good place to stay for the first night on the JMT?

Yes, there are bear boxes there, and yes, it can be a good place to stay for the first night on the JMT. I think it’s a good idea because in such a high-use area, there’s less impact staying at a place that’s already in use, rather than setting up a site on virgin soil. I stayed there last year when I hiked the JMT mid-September. The high camps were not opened last year so the only people staying there were backpackers; the experience might be different if the camp is in business during your visit.

I just got back yesterday from staying at Sunrise. If you are traveling solo, look for great single spots just below the solar toilets but above the trail. There is a water facuet about 200 feet directly above the same toilets. I led a group of 10 and stayed in the larger spots near the top. If your arrive after 2pm, it’s likely many of the good spots will be taken. Have a great hike.

Going all of the way to Sunrise from Happy Isles is a great option if you’re not an overweight forty-something hiker 8). It’s a long climb, especially if you are not acclimated. If you can allow an extra day, try camping at the Cloud’s Rest junction and double back early the next morning to climb Half Dome. You can beat the crowds and it makes an awesome bookend to your finish at Whitney.
