Bear Boxs / Rodents?

To save me from carrying more food than necessary between MTR and Whitney a friend is going to leave food for me in the Charlotte Lake Bear Box. The food will be dropped off about two weeks before I get there. Question: Do I need to take precautions to prevent rodents from getting to my food or will a nylon stuff sack work?

Be sure that you’re allowed to do this. I’ve heard of rangers checking the bear boxes and clearing out items that have been left there for several days.

Rangers, not rodents. Bear boxes are for overnight storage of food - they are not cache facilities. Rangers will remove stored items. During the past 3 years I’ve run into four individuals who had stuff removed from bear boxes at Tyndall and Rock Creek.

I’ve heard the same thing about the rangers. If you go ahead with that plan, take extra precautions. I’ve got a half dollar size hole in the bottom of a nylon stuff sack that was created in one night. And my food bag was with me in my tarptent while I slept when it happened.

Glad I asked. Thanks!

They must have put in that bear box after I left a note for the ranger describing my “bear wrestle”; actually, I just screamed at an ear piercing high pitch & the bear that had fallen on my legs in a coffin shaped tent jumped up & started pacing back & forth at the largest tree at Charlotte lake, about 15 feet high… we threw rocks & banged pots which made it leave… we shoulda known one was in the area as we had seen "dukies’ with plastic wrap in em; clawed trees; & footprints… but we still slept with our food! Don’t do that, especially if you have massive quantities of chocolate like I did!!! PCT 93
