  1. Other than Yosemite, can someone tell me were bear cans are MANDATORY on the JMT. Thanks.
  2. Are there bear boxes at Cathedral Lakes?

There were no bear boxes at Cathedral Lakes last summer.

I found a map online that clearly lays out the mandatory canister areas:

Thanks Celt for map. I love the same chatter about bear cans I heard 10+ years ago. I’m pretty sure I’ll be using a Ursack then. If I happen to see a ranger between Sunrise and Tuolumne, I’ll just tell him that we camped at Sunrise, since they have boxes there. I’ll be camping night two somewhere in Ansel Adams…where the “approved” cans are not an issue. Bye bye Yosemite…

we hiked over taboose pass and met the ranger around Marjorie and he was a nice guy but fist thing he made sure we all had cans and no ursacks. i dont know what he would do if he found you with one but he probably wont be happy.
