I am preparing to spend some time in the Sierras, and I possibly will hike the JMT. What is the deal with the bear canisters? Do you have to buy one, or can you rent one in Yosemite? What is the price to purchase one, and what is the price to rent one?

If you don’t live somewhere where you will use the canister frequently, you can rent one of the older style
Garcia canisters VERY cheaply at Yosemite. It used to be $3 or $5 for your trip, with a refundable deposit. Not sure what the current price is. If you are going to be hiking elsewhere or plan to use a can more frequently, you could try the lighter, larger, and more user-friendly Bear Vault, which I think is around $80. If money is no object, the Bearikade can from Wild Ideas is even lighter (although not quite as easy to use), but it is quite expensive. Wherever you decide to go, enjoy your hike!
