My son and I are planning a 2 week trip on the CT this June (Sections 3 to 10). How necessary are bear canisters, or the need to hang food overnight?
Also, what conditions can we expect on Mt. Massive the last week of June?

I hiked Segment 10 and Mt. Massive last year from June 26 -28 and I had no problems at all. Mt. Massive was awesome and a good hike. There was a snow drift the trail took as through about 750 feet below the summit but it was only about 50 feet in width. I am hiking the whole CT this year and am not going to use canisters however, I do hang my food every night and take precaution. I seen people not practicing this last year and I don’t think alot of people do, but I feel more comfortable knowing that smellables are away from my tent. I did the same thing going up Missouri Mt. last September.

I would not think there is any need for a canister, however hang your food always. Have never had a bear problem, I live here and hike portions of the CT every summer.

I did a two week hike on the CT and hung my food every night without a problem. I never even saw any sign of bears during my trip.

I hung my food from tree trunks using 2 ursacks all the way down the CDt…of course you have to have trees & thus can’t camp much above the treeline. Canisters you can throw in a meadow away from your tent, but unfortunately I like foods that take up alot of space! (can’t put bread, chips, etc… in canisters.)
