Bear canning - John Muir Trail

Where do most people rent their cans from or do most people buy them? It looks like the Bearikade bear canister is the lighest and also the most expensive. Does anyone know if these are the models that you can rent from Yosemite?

Thanks.

The bear cans one can rent from Yosemite are the Garcia Backpackers. They’re about 650 cubic inches, and heavy, but they rent from Yosemite for $5 for the whole trip.

approved.

From the Ursack site…

We met with a number of Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group (SIBBG) members and others on March 8, 2007. We made a presentation to them which stressed the fact that our new Spectra (S29) Ursack is identical to the one they tested extensively and successfully in 2004. There are many hundreds of S29s in circulation, but we were unable to manufacture them for the last two years because the military took all the Spectra fabric. The Ursack S29 has a perfect record in preventing bears from getting food rewards in the Sierra. Despite the fact that the S29 tested well and has a perfect record, SIBBG wants to test it again in Yosemite in 2007, and will not approve it for use anywhere until it passes that test. The V21 (Vectran bags sold prior to August 18, 2006) are no longer approved. The V27, which is 27.5% stronger than the V21, has never been tested, nor has it had any reported failures. Until we hear further details as to the probable timing and duration of the Yosemite test(s), we are not sure how we will proceed–other than to continue to sell both the S29 and V27 with a warning that they are not approved for SIBBG restricted areas.

Great summary Clark!

When I received my JMT Wilderness permit I noticed - like you did - that cannisters are required about 9600’. I thought that bears did not live about this.

FYI-- I heard from the Bearikade folks and they have a special rental rate for JMT ThruHikers. If I remember correctly its $55 dollar flat rate for the Expedition model.

As a one timer, that’s likely the way I’ll go.

You can rent directly from Bearikade and mail them their container back after you are done. Otherwise, you need to call around to various outfitters and see if any of them rent the Bearikade.

The BV400 is also approved. It weighs 2lb 9oz (ouf!), has 700ci capacity, and is 8.7"x12.7".

There is a rental program for PCT Thrus, where you can rent directly from Bear Vault for $60, http://www.bearvault.com/bearvault_rentals.php, although that’s not too much cheaper than the $80 (can be found cheaper on sale) to buy it.
