Was at pinefield hut on tuesday night when i got chased away by a mumma bear and her cub. Was going down to pinefield hut, and just before the ‘stream’ you cross to get to the front of the shelter the mumma cam charging from the back and made huffy noises and her cub was trailing her… so i kinda backpeddled dang quickly back up the trail… scared the crap outta me, being so close.

so if your gonna be around pinefield hut, any time soon, be carefull…

Planning a section Rockfish to Harpers Ferry in a couple of weeks. How is the water situation? Are the waysides and stores still open?

Seems the bears are sensing cooler weather is on the way so are getting agressive for food?

She was after you in that kilt I bet !! Better bring your wife Xena with you, so she can stake her claim the next time around !!

Still, I am jealous you get to live so close, and hike alot, bear or no bear…

I was near there this year and I was taking a dump and this stump with fuzzy ears decided to check me out, and I was a shaking with my pants down and many things came to mind but the actions did not speak louder than those choosen words that eclipsed from my lips-
WAIT A MINUTE! alas, those where the correct words to say to mr. Bear when confronted within 15 yrds. We enjoyed each others company for a very short time there after.
And the moral to this story is left for the gentle reader.

The other day I was on Hawkins Island in Alaska and two juvenile browns charged a fishing guide and his two clients. One bite and swiped the younger of the two clients and charged the guide only to die at his feet with a few slugs from a shotgun in it… Yikes… I’ve seen so many bears out here… but no problems…

one love,

dioko: the water in snp should be alright, while it has been dry, alot of the springs will still be running. the waysides are still open as well.

bears are always looking for food in the park, regardless of weather. most are docile though, so no worries.

actually water in SNP isnt very good right now at all! most srpings at the huts are less than a drip and trickle. took 10 minutes to fill my pot at blackrot hut from the dripping spring…

water is scarse. the waysides are open, campground at loft mountain etc. a lot of marked springs are dry tho. PATC (or snp rangers) have signs up saying such and such is dry etc.

calf mountain has dripping spring. no between ‘just after’ calf mountain hut and blackrock hut (about 10 miles).

pinefield hut has some stagnant water in the creek behind the hut.

I see bears every so often on my daily jog between chester gap and compton gap on the A-T. The only incident I had is when the bear didn’t see or smell me coming and I came a few feet from it just after I jogged past a large downed log and the bear was very startled and bang his feet on the ground and snorted. I just kep’t jogging by. Scared the crap out of me. Bears are a creature of habbit and will come back to the same spots to feed every day at around the same time. Last summer on the A-T I saw what i Think is the same bear looking for insects in downed logs along the trail just north of compton gap. Yesterday on my run I saw many turned over logs but no bears.
