Bear Rock Falls campsite in Mass

Maybe this is common knowledge for hikers in Massachusetts but it caught many groups unaware this past weekend. The Bear Rock Falls camping area just north of Sages Ravine has been closed for reforestation. Fortunately, a new camping site has been opened 0.1 miles south of Bear Rock Falls and is called the Laurel Ridge Campsite. It’s on the west (uphill) side of the trail and consists of a spring, privy, bear box, and several single and double tent pad sites. An AMC ridgerunner on Bear Mountain gave us this info just before we dropped into Sages Ravine.

The trail was in great shape between Salisbury and the Race Brook Falls trail and I briefly talked to a couple of thru-hikers as they passed by. This was my 10-year old son’s first backpacking trip and he is hooked. The views from Mount Race were great and he was amazed to be able to look back at Lion’s Head and Bear Mountain knowing that he climbed them on his own. All in all, it was a great Father’s Day weekend!
