I will be hiking in new jersey this August and I have heard the bears can be troublesome. Has anyone hiked in this state yet? Can you give me some tips to keep my distance?

I’ve hiked alone in August in NJ, and there were few others on the trail. I sang (badly and loudly) and clanked my poles against rocks to warn bears of my presence. One crashed down out of a tree and stood about 30 feet away patiently waiting for me to pass. I’ve seen several (or one several times) near Mohican, and others along the trail about 15 miles north.

I live in Jersey and I fear the people here a lot more than bears…

just did a solo weekend trip along the AT in Jersey in the Delaware Water gap… another hiker saw 3 black bears in a day. But the ranger told me they are very shy and I didn’t see any in 2 days / 30 miles… camped too, no problem.

Thanks…cece and ben franklin. You have put my mind at ease. I think I will put some bells on my poles for this hike. Good to know that the bears are still shy.
Hope you have good hiking this year. Zip

The May-June 20010 isuue of AT Journeys magazine published by the AT Conservancy has an article on Black Bears along the AT. For further info they list:

< http://www.bear.org/website/ > You might find this site of interest, especially parts about behavior. I was watching it over the winter, and now, of course, Lily and Hope have left the den, but there are some good videos in the archives. I’ve run into bears face to face 3 times (which was 3 times too many :frowning: ) But I don’t know who was scared more, the bear or me!

Is anyone starting on June 16? I’ve got a permit for 24 days, ending on July 10. My partner can’t make it and I’d like to meet others who will be on the trail. I’ll be in Yosemite on Tuesday, June 15 to hang… I’d love to meet other hikers who are doing it.

Please contact me by phone if you want to try to meet on June 15 or 16 or even 17, perhaps at the ranger station, permit pick up.

Looking forward to the trail still!
