I’ve never heard of any bear activity along the AT/LT in Vermont. The bears are there, and there is a hunting season, so the bears are not as bold as elsewhere along the AT.
Still, standard precaution is always to hang your food at night.

There was a hear incident in Vermont this year. I don’t remember the details, but I think a bear went into a shelter
and stole food. If you’re worried, hang your food properly outside the shelter.

Plenty of bears in S. Vt, but you’ll rarely see them. Last year in July ('02) a bear hanging around Seth Warner shelter snatched a pack dragging it into the woods when the hiker had gone off for water. A friend of mine has a camp nearby off a a logging road and says he has spotted some pretty good sized bears scoping the area out.
