Beginner - 6 day hike

Hello all,
So, I’m a beginner hiker. I’ve gone on one-day hikes, but I really want to go on a 6 day hike in the AT.

So, I would like your general thoughts/opinions.

  1. Would you recommend a beginner going alone on a 6 day hike?
  2. If so, where would you recommend? I was told to start at Franconia to the White Mountains, ending at Ethan Pond.
  3. What does one usually need to pack for a longer trip? I’m all set on gear, just food/water is causing a bit of concern.

Thanks of course for all your help, it’s greatly appreciated!

Just kidding: we all started with a tiny bit of scout experience etc… Check the weather report carefully, as you don’t want to arrive at Whites in a hurricane as I did…the AT databook has all the water sources which if it’s been a wet year up there as it has down south, should all be running… I usually carried at least a liter in a wet area, much more if on a dry ridge like the Presidents etc… if you have body fat, you will not need to eat as much as a thru hiker a few months on trail… I usually started out only eating 1 to 2 lbs or 2,500-5,000 calories depending on how hot it was & how fat I was! Take into account any cafes or stores you can gorge at & resupply at.
In summer, will be lots of other hikers on the main trails but bear in mind many have died of hypothermia in august so take a aluminized plastic space blanket or 2 (only half an ounce each) which you can cover your sleeping bag with…I throw it off during my last few minutes of sleep to let body heat dry out my bag cuz it causes sweat moisture to collect on outside of your bag… a silk slpg bag liner weighs about 4-6 oz & keeps your bag clean & also adds 5-10 degrees warmth! Carry a small extra compass or a small GPS & cellphone for safety in case of trouble perhaps.
