Belden to burney falls

I want to hike this section this summer. What is the trail condition like since the big fire last summer? Specifically, is it possible to follow the “trail” thru the burnt area?

I know of several 08ers who went back in September/October and made it through without grave difficulty. If you don’t get the specific info you want here, try going to Postholer and asking Brian Lewis. He went through after the fire.

I met Scott Williamson last summer during his 78 day thru hike. He hiked this section DURING the fire. Got caught by the fire fighters but made it through with them as chaperones.

You might want to check with the new PCTA regional representative, Justin Kooyman, at JKooyman@pcta.org or 530-414-3422. He indicated last month that he would be checking this section of trail in the very near future.

There where still some downed trees across the trail just outside of burney for maybe 2 miles tops. Trail still very easy to follow. No fire damage until you get over to humbug or humboldt summit ( i forget which but it is over near butt mtn.) Here the pct was the fire perimeter. No damage and the trail was the fire line so it is still obvious. Some singed trees but mostly it was the groundcover that burned. After that no problem all the way to burney. Dig the register at the mid point. Only a few names in there from last year. The upside of fires is the wildlife was thick last year in the closures. Saw 5 pairs and 2 of those cubs from quincy la porte to belden.

hope that helps
