Best Cell Phone Company for PCT

Okay, right now, let’s get past the “I’m in the wilderness to get away from my phone” spat.

For the people who’ve been out hiking on the PCT, which carrier have you had the best luck with? On the Florida Trail, it seems like Cingular takes the cake, but looking into the west, they don’t have quite as good of a foothold. So if anyone happens to have any sage advice in this decision, I’d really appreciate it.

We bounced our cell phone to ourselves along the PCT in 2005 so we could have it for all those calls in town. We use Verizon and we had service in every town (even little burgs like Etna and Chester). All in all it worked well for us. As far as phones that work ON the trail, I don’t know. Hope this helps.
