Best gloves for cold and cold-wet weather

I've hiked 3,000 miles on the PCT in all kinds of weather, including snowstorms, temps in the low 20s, and Washington days-on-end cold rain.

And I’m a hiker whose hands get cold easily, then stay cold. This is challenging because I function well in bad weather, except for my hands.

Try as I might, I haven’t found a good all-around glove, mitten, or glove-mitten-shell combination that’s light weight, compressible, and works well in both cold and cold-wet weather.

So I’m reaching out to my AT brethren for advice. I know you deal with tough weather a lot. Thanks.

I feel your pain. The only thing that works for me is insulated ski gloves. They are warm and windproof but heavy and non compressible. They do soak thru in a driving rainstorm but will still manage to keep my hands warm.

Not to beat a dead horse, but have you considered vapor barrier liner gloves beneath your mitt of choice? Often if you completely eliminate evaporative cooling from occurring you will warm up and stay warm. Any sweating inside the gloves may be minimal for someone who has trouble keeping extremities warm in the first place. What sweating does occur creates sort of a wetsuit effect that keeps a warm layer of moisture next to your skin, insulating you against external cold and moisture. And of course blocking wind as well, since a VBL is, by nature, also air-impermeable.

You could even start with simple latex or nitrile medical gloves and then go from there.

If VBL gloves won’t work for you, then you could always experiment with various layups of neoprene and windstopper fabric.

Or just hike faster? Turn those paws into the five-fingered radiators they were designed to be!
