I use Topomaps. It doesn't store trip data or track movment with "breadcrumbs." I keep my phone in airplane mode while in the backcountry and the battery has lasted a week for photos and GPS fixes as needed. I can use the GPS fix to place myself on a paper map with 16' accuracy. 7.5 minute maps are downloaded in advance and stored on my phone. The app was 7.99 and the maps are free.
